What to know about 2027 benefit limits (what's announced and what isn't yet)

Open enrollment is here for many people, and you may be choosing benefits for 2027. Some of the 2027 limits are already out. Others are not. Here is a simple rundown, as of November 1, 2026.

Announced: 2027 HSA limits

The IRS released the 2027 health savings account (HSA) numbers in Revenue Procedure 2026-24. For 2027:

  • You can put up to $4,500 in an HSA with self-only coverage.
  • You can put up to $9,000 with family coverage.

To count as a high deductible health plan (HDHP) for HSA rules in 2027, a plan must have a deductible of at least $1,750 (self-only) or $3,500 (family). Its out-of-pocket costs can't go over $8,700 (self-only) or $17,400 (family). Read more in What is an HSA?

Announced: 2027 Marketplace out-of-pocket limit

If you buy a plan on HealthCare.gov, the most you'll pay for covered in-network care in 2027 is $12,000 for one person or $24,000 for a family. That is up from $10,600 and $21,200 in 2026. Premiums don't count toward this limit. Job-based plans set their own out-of-pocket maximum, so check your plan summary.

Not announced yet: 2027 health FSA limit

As of November 1, 2026, the IRS has not yet announced the 2027 health flexible spending account (FSA) limit. For 2026, the limit is $3,400, and the most a plan can let you carry over is $680 (IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32). See What is an FSA?

Not announced yet: 2027 401(k) limits

The IRS has not yet announced the 2027 401(k) limits either. The IRS says it issues these yearly updates each fall. For 2026 (IRS Notice 2025-67):

  • $24,500 in employee contributions
  • $8,000 extra catch-up if you're 50 or older
  • $11,250 catch-up instead if you're 60, 61, 62, or 63

You may see guesses for 2027 online. Those are estimates, not IRS numbers. See 401(k) basics and employer match.

What to do now

  • Pick your 2027 HSA amount using the new limits above.
  • If you're choosing an FSA or 401(k) amount, keep in mind the 2027 limit isn't final yet. Check your enrollment materials or IRS.gov for the final number once it's out.
  • Employers: plan to update payroll and enrollment materials when the IRS posts the 2027 FSA and 401(k) numbers.

We'll post an update when the IRS announces the rest.
